International Mother Language Day was declared by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 (30C/62). In its resolution A/RES/56/262 of 2002, the UN General Assembly praised the declaration of the day.
In it's A/RES/61/266 resolution from the 16th of May 2007, the UN General Assembly urged its members to "support the preservation and conservation of all languages utilized by peoples of the globe." In reality, the General Assembly declared the International Year of Languages in 2008 with the same resolution in order to promote multilingualism and multiculturalism and promote unity in variety, and it designated UNESCO as the year's leading organization.
This program undoubtedly raised awareness of language-related issues and mobilized partners and resources to assist in the implementation of plans and policies for linguistic diversity and multilingualism throughout several regions of the world. We cannot deny the fact that language is essential to communication of all types, and that communication is a key factor in social change and advancement. Let us inform you that linguistic variety was becoming more and more endangered, which is why the International Year of Languages was established.
On the occasion of World Mother Language Day, the Chapainawabganj district chapter of Pathway organized a quiz, drawing, and poetry competition at Nawabganj High School.
